A lot of people buy a lot of stuff at community garage sales. Depending on the neighborhood, the quality of the goods can vary widely. If you can, go to a community garage sale in a nice neighborhood and you generally will get nice stuff. Sadly, the opposite is also true – a community garage sale in a not so good neighborhood will usually have some not so good stuff. There are many exceptions, however.
If you are going to community garage sales as a buyer there are a few items of etiquette that you need to be aware of.
1. Don’t show up too early. The vendors need time to set up before the buyers arrive and don’t like poeple rummaging through their goods while they are trying to lay them out.
2. Don’t have a heated argument over an item priced at under a dollar. This is just not good practice and may result in the seller nort selling you anything at all.
3. Watch out for impulse buying and buying things you don’t really need just because they are there. Your partner may not be too happy if you return home with armfuls of junk.
If you are thinking of holding community garage sales in your area, there are many websites which offer advice on the organisation of community garage sales and I would recommend that you take a look at some of them. A little guidance will save a lot of heartache later and having to face several disappointed neighbors. In broad terms you need to:
1. Decide on the community group. Is it neighbors in an area, members of a church or a group of friends
2. Choose a good location. Is it free, easy to get too, good parking available, big enough?
3. Choose a theme. Will it be general household, clothes only, electrical items, sports stuff? Will the theme attract the right people to come as buyers?
4. Advertise, advertise, advertise. Start advertising community garage sales around two to four weeks before the event. Newspapers, posters, shop windows, radio, etc. Any costs can be split amongst the sellers at the community garage sales.
If this is all planned out carefully then your community garage sales should be a great experience for both the vendors and the buyers. If you can’t find the stuff you are looking for at the community garages sales in your area, try the search facilities on our preconfigured search engines.
